Hot Flushes: one of the most common menopause symptoms

In trials of Nutri5®, 90% of women reported a reduction in all major symptoms of menopause including hot flushes.

Hot flushes, sometimes called hot flashes, are a sensation of sudden warmth or heat that quickly spreads across the body causing flushing, sweating and general discomfort.

Hot flushes can have a very significant effect on quality of life and cause great embarrassment, especially in the workplace or socially and the impact on general well-being and self-esteem should not be underestimated. Some women experience infrequent mild hot flushes while others have more severe episodes several times a day.

Causes
The major cause of hot flushes in menopausal women is the changing level of oestrogen in the body. Reduced amounts of oestrogen are thought to have an effect on the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for controlling appetite, sex hormones, sleep, and body temperature, however the exact mechanism of this has yet to be established.

Hot Flushes can be experienced as
  • A sudden, intense feeling of heat
  • Flushing, or reddening of the face and neck
  • Perspiring
  • Cold chills (which often occur after a hot flush)
  • Sleep disturbances caused by night sweats
Simple Solutions
  • Plan your day so you do not have to rush around
  • Keep ice water or a cold beverage close by
  • Take a cool shower before bed.
  • Use cotton sheets
  • Keep a cold pack near your pillow
  • Consider using air conditioning, ceiling and floor fans, and even small handheld fans.
In addition to making these simple changes, try to avoid common triggers such as:
  • Warm environments
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Hot and spicy foods and drinks
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Over-consumption of caffeine, alcohol, and sugar.
However, while the above measures often help to reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flushes, they are unable to treat the root of the problem, which is a hormonal imbalance.

Most experts agree that combining a healthy lifestyle with natural solutions is the best course of action to alleviate menopausal symptoms.
